Ok, I’m really getting into this Essential Oils thing; especially because I feel so good about reducing the amount of products in my house that have chemicals in them (get away from my bae!). This is my second week using the oils in my starter kit, and I’m having so much fun finding recipes and learning about all the different ways I can use them. Because I bought a starter kit, I get access to private Facebook groups where other Young Living members post about the oils they love and what recipes they are using. It is a really fun community, and I am learning so much. I’m actually having a hard time choosing which recipes to try 🙂 Here are a few ways I’ve used the oils this week.
Bug Spray – I am LOVING this bug spray. Ashley sent me a little sampler bottle of Citronella (thanks, girl!) that I used for this recipe. Our backyard tends to flood, so the mosquitoes can be hellacious. When I was pregnant (and Zika was just becoming problematic) I was on the hunt for a natural/pregnancy safe bug spray, and had a pretty hard time finding one. Not to mention how gross I feel when I use store bought bug sprays. Its just so sticky. I feel like dirt just sticks to me, and my legs feel gross.
A few days ago, Chris and I were playing with Beckett in the backyard when some seriously demon mosquitoes started
biting attacking us, so we tried out our new (homemade!) bug spray. Ok, I’m not even kidding about this: I didn’t see another mosquito the rest of the day. Not one.
Using it on kiddos is probably fine, but since I haven’t looked into it yet, I just sprayed it in my hand and rubbed it on the back of Beckett’s clothes. That totally did the trick. I didn’t have a single bite. Score!
10 drops Citronella
10 drops Purification
10 drops Lemongrass (optional)
5 drops Peppermint
Fill with 3/4 water and 1/4 Witch Hazel
Shake before every use!
Garden Spray – If I’m being honest, I’m not the gardener in the family. That would be Chris. Sure, I can mostly keep house plants alive; and if my 100 pound lab (Cooper) would stop jumping all over my azaleas, I could probably keep those alive too. For actual food though, Chris is our resident green thumb. Last summer’s garden included some of the biggest cucumbers and most delicious tomatoes I’ve ever eaten. Yum.
However, last year’s crop did have a few buggy problems that Chris had to deal with. Because he is growing food, he doesn’t want to use any pesticides, so pest control options are pretty limited. To avoid buggy issues this year, I made him an oily garden spray to keep the bugs away! Here’s what ya need (I doubled the recipe):
6 oz. of Distilled Water
0.5 oz. of Witch Hazel or Vodka (to help the oil and water mix)
10 drops Peppermint
Combine in a spray bottle and mist plants daily!
Bug Bite Relief – For those times when you forget your bug spray before heading out to the garden (I’m looking at you, Christopher), this Bug Bite Relief roller is just what you’ll need to keep from scratching yourself to death! Honestly, you can use this for relief for lots of things. Crescen bumped her elbow really hard the other day (like REALLY hard) and used some and instantly felt relief. Sweet!
Bug Bite Relief
13 drops Copaiba
13 drops Peppermint
13 drops Panaway
Top with carrier oil and rub on bites!
Gum/Mouth Relief – Okay, so technically this is the same one that Ashley and I have both talked about before, for teething, but it helps soothe adult issues too! Honestly, I now know why Beckett gives me the biggest grin every time I open his teething roller bottle. Before ever using it on him, I tried it myself, but because I had no pain, I felt nothing. When I tried it on my extremely painful spot in my mouth that I kept accidentally biting, that’s when I felt something…or I guess you could say I felt nothing. Instant relief. I also didn’t feel numb, like you would from something like Orajel. Just try eating after using Orajel…I dare you. Not fun.
For Beckett, I heavily dilute it in a carrier oil; but for me, I used it straight out of the bottle (which I’m learning is called ‘neat’).
Purification in the Vacuum – I have four animals, y’all. I vacuum ALL. THE. TIME. I just started adding a drop of Purification to the filter of my vacuum, and it really makes my house smell amazing. And my vacuum too. And it needed it. That thing stinks!
Lemon in Water – I literally beg Chris to drink water. Even if he fills a glass, he rarely remembers to finish drinking it. He tried putting a drop of Lemon in his water last week and he loved it. He actually said, out loud, to me, “This is going to make me drink more water.” Hallelujah. Thank you Lemon.
